Education Services

Education advisor

The Education Advisor (EA) works within the onTrac@PeterMac multidisciplinary team with an aim to maintaining educational opportunities and social connectedness for adolescents and young adults referred to the program. The diagnosis of cancer and its treatment will have an impact on the education pathway for adolescents and young adults. The education advisors role is to assist with the linking the young person, educational setting and hospital, to ascertain and support their educational needs, choices and direction, to maximise their educational opportunities.

The diagnosis of cancer disrupts the young person's participation in routine education activities which potentially will have a disruptive affect on academic achievement and social development. With effective communication and planning, taking into account the adolescent and young adults situation encourage choices that will maximise their opportunities to learn and succeed.

Secondary students

The key focus is to develop sustainable links with the school of origin that will maximise the connection for the student, family and health professionals

Service provision includes:

  • Liaising with, student ,educational setting and hospital staff to set up Program, or VCE Support Groups in school to support the student
  • Developing and co-ordinating the use of Information and Communication Technologies to sustain links between hospital home and school for continuity of educational opportunities and connectivity
  • Provision of professional development for the school about educational implications for students

Post secondary

Tertiary institutions and post school educational settings have support services for students studying under special circumstances. Accessing these supports can assist a student to identify their needs, and will provide information and services to achieve education and learning goals.

Making a referral

Referrals can come from a number of sources. The client may already be part of the onTrac service, in which case the referral will come from the Doctor, Clinical Nurse Coordinator or member of the treating team. However, if they are not already part of the service you are welcome to refer directly.
