Music Therapy Service
What is music therapy?
Music therapy is the planned and creative use of music experiences to attain and maintain health and well-being. A variety of musical methods can be explored within a supportive relationship with the qualified music therapist, and you don't need to have musical skill or background to participate (Australian Music Therapy Association, www.austmta.org.au).
How can music therapy be useful?
onTrac@PeterMac understands that it's important to address all aspects of your care. Music is an important part of many people's lives, and music therapy can offer opportunities for people to share their musical background, experience familiar or new types of music, compose and play varying instruments. Music therapy can be focused on the music, but it may also be a place where arising concerns and feelings maybe shared and worked through.
What happens in a music therapy session?
Any young person registered with onTrac@PeterMac can ask to meet with Pip Barry, the Redkite Music Therapist. Pip can spend some time with you to talk about your musical interests and your goals for music therapy sessions. A range of music therapy methods can be explored including:
- live music
- music relaxation and imagery
- computer-based music software to create your own CDs
- guided songwriting
- recording your own songs
- therapeutic music lessons
- playing or borrowing an instrument
